About The Session
I received a call the day of the session from a friend saying that the Pubonics were getting together to play at the Blue Goose that night. We'd just finished shooting and editing some video and our camera equipment was ready to go, so I said I'd shoot a little tape for posterity. Originally, I planned to go it alone, but my buddy and engineer David said he'd lend a hand, making it a two-camera shoot.
This opened up new possibilities and other issues, such as sound and lighting. We devised a wireless system during the day hoping that it would work in the venue. I'd shot at the Goose way back in the Nineties and remembered that the stage was tight and the lighting low.
So we were flying by the seat of our pants. I learned that Mambo was hosting the open mike event, so I called him to give a heads up that video was going to happen. I also wanted to give the owner notice as a courtesy.
I'm not going to say that the shoot went off without a hitch, but I think what we did get turned out pretty good. Considering, we had not planned shots, had no sound engineer or director to manage camera takes, and no tv monitor so the camera operators can coordinate their shots.
We used Panasonic HD-quality cameras, but recorded in maniaDV mode on to 100 GB drives attached to each camera. Our mics were wireless, positioned to capture the sound in the room as it came. We'd like to know who the screamer was in later sets, but that's the pit falls of recording live. We made up some of the short comings in the editing suite, even though some of the "takes" we needed just were not there.
None the less, we look forward to taping other sessions and improving on the final product. We also have a DVD available, if you're interested contact me.
We hope you enjoy the show.
